The "Gone" Project
Inspired by the lyrics "you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone" the Hallmark Society began an extensive project to identify potential heritage buildings before they are gone forever.
In
June 2007, a significant house built in the 1860s was gutted in James
Bay. However, nobody knew of the significance or that it was built so
early in our city’s existence because the house was not Designated
Heritage by the City of Victoria, nor was it on the Heritage
Registry. It just slipped through the cracks. Therefore the owner
–who thought it dated from about 1910-- could do what he wanted with it.
The
Hallmark Society has vowed to try to do something about this, in order
that future generations won’t look back and wonder how we could let
such buildings go. We are compiling a list of buildings that might be
vulnerable and researching their value. Once that phase of the project
is complete, we plan to request the appropriate city council to protect
them.
The criteria for inclusion in the project:
A structure –house, store, office, public building, bridge, outhouse,
wall, fence, barn, fountain, lane, alley, creek, streetscape,
green-space….;
That is NOT currently protected by community bylaws such as Heritage Designation or Registry;
That is at risk for some reason (It’s abandoned, it’s surrounded by new
development, it’s in an area zoned for something bigger….);
It likely has considerable age (may be before 1910);
It may be significant or have some interesting history (owners, occupants, architecture).
We contacted all neighbourhood community association, heritage and
history organizations, municipal staff and the general public for
input. We started with a list of 30 buildings that have never been
recognized as “heritage” although there are compelling reasons for
each’s inclusion on our list.
We began research on the listed properties in October 2006 but have found that it is very time-consuming and detail and beyond the capabilities of our volunteer workforce. We had our summer student employee complete research and a final report on 4 properties in addition to her other duties and would like to continue hiring student researchers to complete the project. There is some urgency to the need to bring the list and its results to municipalities as one building that was on the original list has since been demolished and two more are threatened.
