BC Hydro Power Pioneers Award

The BC Hydro Power Pioneers is a retiree organization made up of thousands of former BC Hydro, BC Electric and BC Power Commission employees throughout the province. The Power Pioneers motto is “Continuing a Lifetime of Service to our Communities”, something they accomplish by fundraising for charitable causes, community volunteerism, and serving as spokespeople for BC Hydro.

The BC Hydro Power Pioneers Award will be presented to the project at each Regional Fair throughout British Columbia that best meets the award criteria. The organizing committees at each Fair will coordinate the selection of the recipient at their Fairs. Where possible, a member of the Power Pioneers will be invited to be part of the selection committee. All Power Pioneers are encouraged to participate by attending the Fairs, volunteering to judge student projects, or joining the Regional Fair organizing committee in their area.

The project may be presented in English, French, or an Aboriginal language, at any grade level from 4 to 10. Ideally, the selected Project will have a theme centered on a story involving BC Hydro or its predecessors – the British Columbia Electric Company and the British Columbia Power Commission. For example, the project might tell the story of early transportation or electric endeavours in BC or the story of the people involved - dam builders, labourers, trade unionists or streetcar conductors. Where there is no project meeting the above criteria, the award may be presented to a project on a BC pioneer.

The award consists of a book and a certificate of achievement. Where the winning project is presented by more than one student, each student will receive a certificate and the book award will be awarded to the school library of the award winners. Where possible, a member of the BC Hydro Power Pioneers will be invited to present the award at an award ceremony (venues differ from region to region).

A student may receive the BC Hydro Power Pioneers Award only once during his/her participation in the Historica Fairs Program.

In the same year, a student may not be selected as the Power Pioneers recipient and the recipient of any other major award.
