Historic Places Award

The Historic Places Award promotes a culture of conservation through youth engagement and the acknowledgement of values based heritage management. By conserving and celebrating these places, we contribute to the future of our communities. This award is sponsored by the Historic Places Initiative and the Government of British Columbia’s Heritage Branch.

The Historic Places Initiative (HPI) is a collaboration involving all levels of government - local, provincial, territorial and federal. Together, HPI partners have created the tools to enable Canadians to learn about, value, enjoy and conserve our country's historic places.

Heritage Branch recognizes that British Columbia’s historic places – buildings, other structures, landscapes, historic districts, and other places of heritage value – are crucial to our understanding and appreciation of the identity and character of our communities. Through its programs, the branch encourages and facilitates the protection and conservation of heritage property in British Columbia.

The Historic Places Award will be presented to the project at each Regional Fair throughout British Columbia that best meets the award criteria. The organizing committees at each Fair will coordinate the selection of the recipient at their Fairs. Project may be presented in English, French, or an Aboriginal language, at any grade level from 4 to 10.

Project must have as its theme a historic place in British Columbia. Project must highlight an aspect of history or heritage related to buildings or the built environment. Project may illustrate the student(s’) connection between their community and the built heritage. Students must demonstrate enthusiasm for learning about the history, heritage and culture of BC architecture and historic places, reflecting the values these places hold for the community and/or for the student.

The award consists of a National Historic Sites pass and a certificate of achievement. Where the selected project is presented by more than one student, each student will receive a pass and certificate. In addition, a book will be awarded to the school library of the award winner(s).

A student may receive the Historic Places Award only once during his/her participation in the Fairs Program.

In the same year, a student may not be selected as the Historic Places Award recipient and the recipient of any other major award.
